Use Thermographic Cameras in a Range of Applications

A thermographic camera is popularly known as FLIR or Forward Looking InfraRed. This camera that creates images using infrared radiation. The common camera is different from the thermographic camera in the sense that it uses visible light to create an image. Thermographic cameras use infrared radiation that has a longer wavelength compared to visible light. Thermographic cameras are capable of detecting objects in complete darkness. When you see the images produced by a thermographic camera, you will find that they are monochromatic; this is due to the fact that these cameras use a sensor that is responsive to a single range of infrared radiation wavelength.

Two kinds of thermographic cameras

If you are interested in buying thermographic cameras , you will have to choose between two types of cameras available. You can buy thermographic cameras with cooled infrared image detectors or thermographic cameras with uncooled infrared image detectors.

Cooled infrared image detector cameras have detectors containing a vacuum-sealed case or flask. They are highly sensitive cameras due to the fact that their own temperatures are low in comparison to the objects they detect. There is however a disadvantage in using these cameras as they require some time to cool prior to start functioning again. Another drawback of the cooled infrared image detectors is that maintaining them could be expensive. Uncooled infrared image detector cameras make use of a sensor which functions in ambient temperature. After measuring the changes in resistance, current and voltage, the values are compared to the sensor’s operating temperature. Once the sensors are stabilized to an operating temperature, image noise can be reduced. Uncooled infrared cameras are not cooled to a lower temperature and hence the use of expensive cryogenic coolers can be ruled out. The resolution and quality of the images produced by these cameras are in no comparison to those produced by thermographic cameras with cooled detectors.

Where are thermographic cameras used?

Thermographic cameras are widely used by engineers, manufacturers, ranchers, contractors, in medical fields and in maintenance departments. Originally, thermographic cameras were developed for military use in the time of the Korean War. Since then, these cameras have found use in various other fields in the world of medicine, industry and in commercial establishments.

Adoption of infrared viewing technology has experienced a rise with the dropping of prices. The versatility of these cameras are being increased continuously by thermographers through the use of sophisticated software interfaces and advanced optics.

Buying the best thermographic camera

When you are buying a thermographic camera , remember to find out the lifespan of the sensor. Other factors to consider are the number of pixels, field of view, spectral band and dynamic range. Thermographic cameras can be used in a wide range of applications, so make the most of it.
